Bring the plan in early

Before ordering fixtures or closing walls, discuss the changes you want to make. Moving a sink, replacing a bath and changing an appliance can involve different connection and access requirements. A conversation early in the project helps identify what needs closer assessment.

Share the current layout, the proposed layout and any available drawings. Explain which decisions are final and where you are still considering options.

Connect the design to the installation

Product dimensions and installation specifications matter as much as appearance. Send the make and model of proposed fixtures or equipment when the project is discussed. Ask what existing connections can be used and what changes may be required.

For gas appliances or heating changes, establish the equipment and scope before committing to its location. Installation, ventilation and any applicable permit requirements must be considered for the specific project.

  • Existing and proposed fixture locations
  • Fixture or appliance model information
  • Access to pipework and equipment
  • Any work already completed or ordered

Know who is coordinating the work

Identify the main project contact, the person approving changes and the other trades involved. Discuss the sequence of work so plumbing and mechanical tasks can be considered alongside cabinetry, finishes and other installations.

If people will occupy the property during work, explain how the rooms are used and any access or service interruptions that need planning. Timing and availability should be agreed directly.

Agree on the scope, including the edges

Ask who supplies the fixtures, who handles any necessary permits or inspections, and whether opening or making good walls and finishes is included. Do not assume tasks outside the mechanical work are part of the price.

If a hidden issue is found, confirm how changes will be assessed and authorized. Keeping responsibilities clear helps you compare estimates and understand the next step without relying on assumptions.
